HISTORY OF BERTIE’S

The Black Diamond Store is the oldest original building in Black Diamond, and is believed to have been built around 1909. It quickly became known as “Blakeman’s”, when John Blakeman Jr. purchased the building, and opened his general store in 1921. Blakeman’s was the cornerstone of Black Diamond for decades. It served as the community’s grocery store, gas station, postal outlet and (on occasion), dance hall.

As time rolled on, it housed a restaurant, deli and garage sale centre, and proudly remains the property of the Blakeman family to this day.

In the fall of 2017, it became “Bertie’s General Store” - having been named after Bill Blakeman’s mother, who helped him run the shop. This beautiful heritage building continues to supply the community with quality goods and treasured memories.
